ARCHITECTURE DESIGN OPTION STUDIO
Hlauleka Secondary School is located in Chokwe, Mozambique and is located on a campus next to the primary school. There is an urgency at the Hlauleka school for design that is resilient and affordable in order to grow the access to education and withstand the natural disasters. The work from this studio provides insight into the potential of architectural design in Mozambique to deal with the flooding season.

The goal of the Secondary School Team was to create a site plan that allowed multiple different routes of travel, increased shading for students and grouped programs in an orderly fashion. The existing site contained four buildings at the bottom side of the site, with the rest of the site a blank slate to work with and arrange the requested programs.
Image shows what currently exists on the site of the Secondary school. The four existing buildings are a boys bathroom, girls bathroom, 6 classroom building and 8 classroom building.
The site is located in the city of Chokwe in the Gaza Province of Mozambique, Africa.
Location of Library building within the master plan
The Library building of the secondary school features on the first floor a science laboratory, staff room, offices, covered outdoor reading patio, bookstacks, work areas, lounge areas and a grand staircase. On the second floor is the location of 2 computer labs, an uncovered patio, a children’s section for the primary school to use and additional bookstacks and work areas. The second floor of the library also has a bridge connecting the library and new classrooms to allow for easy access and circulation between the spaces.
The library utilizes natural ventilation through louvered windows and masonry patterns in the walls. The library also uses strategies of clerestory windows to allow in natural lighting and a double roof to help reduce heat gain within the building. The Library is situated in-between the administration, classrooms and kitchen & dining spaces.
Site Walk-Through
Walk-through of Secondary School site. Starting at the driveway entry near the gymnasium and administration building. The video walks through the site moving towards the basketball court, beyond the basketball court is where the existing classrooms and bathrooms are. As the video continues to move through the site you can see the new classrooms, courtyard and library. Once the video walks through the courtyard you are able to view the kitchen and dining room before walking towards the existing classrooms, bathrooms and the flag pole courtyard. The walkthrough ends with the soccer field addition and workshop area before ending back in the parking lot.
