Undulate Aquatic Center

PROF. MAGED GUERGUIS

STRUCTURAL PRINCIPLES IN ARCHITECTURE

Undulate Aquatic Center is a re-design for the University of Tennessee Student Aquatic Center. Research into a variety of waffle and grid structured ceiling conditions were conducted as well as sketches into possible roof forms. The re-design proposed that more glass walls get introduced into the building as well as a waffle structured roof to allow more lighting, and shadow effects that resembles the motion of a wave undulating and flowing. The structure of the roof is to be composed of steel beams with glass paneling over the top with curtain walls surrounding the entirety of the building. Steel helps keep the structural integrity of the roof while also being lightweight and is finished with white powder in the long direction and charcoal black in the perpendicular direction in order to emphasize the longevity of the building.
